John McBride is a graduate of the University of Toronto, (Bachelor of Science, Pharmacy, 1981) and Queen’s University (Master of Science, Community Health and Epidemiology, 1995). He has a particular interest in pharmacy education, medication safety, and optimizing medication use through formulary management and drug utilization review.
John completed a hospital pharmacy residency at the Ottawa General Hospital in 1982 and was an oncology pharmacist at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto (1982–1983). In 1984, he accepted a staff position as oncology and research pharmacist at the Kingston General Hospital and Kingston Regional Cancer Centre. In 1991, he assumed the role of Manager, Clinical Pharmacy Services, at Kingston General Hospital and was the Director of Pharmacy Services from 1996 to 2008. John is currently the Director of Pharmacy at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital in Napanee, Ontario, and a consultant for the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada.
John has been a member of the CSHP since 1981. He has been actively involved in the Ontario Branch, serving as Chapter Chair for Quinte-St. Lawrence (2005–2007) and Presidential Officer (2007–2010). At the National level, John served on the Canadian Hospital Pharmacy Residency Board (1994–1998) and as National Delegate (2003–2005). He has also served as the CSHP representative to the Advisory Committee on Management, Health Canada (2005–2007), a member of the Professional Standards Working Group (2005), and a reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy (1996–2009).
John has held a number of external memberships and appointments with organizations such as the Clinical Trials Group of the National Cancer Institute of Canada, the provincial Drug Quality and Therapeutics Committee, the national Advisory Committee on Pharmaceuticals for the Common Drug Review, the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario, the Hospital Pharmacy Residency Forum of Ontario, and the Core Competency Working Group of HealthForceOntario. Most recently, John was appointed to the Health Professional Advisory Committee for the Southeast Ontario health region.
