Advances in technology have enabled immediate access to vast quantities of information at the touch of a button (or a voice command). In fact, most of us feel like we have too much information, and we’re often left wondering where to find reliable evidence to inform our clinical decision-making. Nonetheless, information that we can rely upon is not always available in a timely manner. This is a challenge for academic journals: How can we make peer- reviewed evidence available for front-line use as quickly as possible? Faster turnaround time between submission and publication, as well as earlier access to important information relevant to the ever-changing world of hospital pharmacy practice, have always been goals of our Editorial Board, as well as top priorities for both authors and readers.

Effective January 1, 2024, Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy (CJHP) articles are being made available through a continuous publication model, which will facilitate more timely access to Journal content. Articles will be published online and assigned to the “open” (current) issue as soon as they have completed the production process. Once published, each article will immediately be sent to PubMed and indexed within 1 to 2 weeks, on average. Page numbers are no longer used for citation purposes, and page numbering will no longer be continuous for all articles in a given volume, although pages will be numbered (starting at 1) within each article PDF. For citation purposes, the electronic identifier—the last 4 digits of the DOI (digital object identifier) for the article, preceded by the letter “e”—is now used in place of an article’s page range. All citation information, including the DOI, will appear on the first page of the PDF version of each CJHP article, as shown above the text of this editorial.

Submitting high-quality manuscripts and actively participating in the peer review process are vital elements in the journey toward improved patient care and advances in our profession. The continuous publication model is a more agile approach, enabling research to reach front-line care providers sooner and making it even more valuable to submit your articles for publication in CJHP. With the launch of the continuous publication model, the CJHP has taken a major step forward in our commitment to provide hospital pharmacists and CJHP readers with timely information essential to their current pharmacy practice. We welcome your feedback and look forward to your continued readership, authorship, peer review, and support.
